SAVE THE PAY PHONE
We want to Save the Payphone. By preserving and making readily available traditional payphones on MTA train platforms, we will then transform them into state of the art internet kiosks. We know that payphones are not yet a thing of the past.
During Hurricane Sandy, for example, payphones were essential for thousands of New Yorkers who did not have service on their cellular plan! The same was true in the citywide blackout in 2003 when nothing was working, including traffic lights, subways, and buses. The only thing working were public payphones and flashlights for two days!
That’s why we are committed to saving the payphone, so that you can always count on reliable service for any situation -- until they are upgraded into the latest state-of-the-art TCC “Everything” kiosks!
The MTA currently wants to rip out existing payphones from train platforms, stations, and terminals. Not only are these remaining payphones an important piece of the past but also an important safety measure for those times when Wifi is unavailable or if there is an emergency.
